George was born in Coningsby, Lincolnshire, in 1816 to a family of merchants in silk. George attended Cambridge University studying History and Archaeology and became a Professor there. He also inherited his father’s business as an only child and he created a separate branch of the business for transporting dig finds from archaeological expeditions that he funded.

In 1838 George married Gertrude White, a flower arranger for the Church in Coningsby. In 1843 they had their first son George Jr, followed in 1845 by their second son James. 1846 saw the birth of their only daughter Helen.

1863 saw George and his wife and their daughter Helen in India attending James’s wedding which ended tragically for the Bride.
