Born in Coningsby, Lincolnshire in 1823, Gertrude White was orphaned at the age of 10 by an accident at sea, she was then brought up by her strictly religious aunt Maria White. Gertrude fell in love with George Woodbridge and they married in 1838, having two sons, George Jr (b.1843) and James (b.1845) and one daughter Helen (b.1846)

In 1863 Gertrude attended James’s wedding that ended in the tragic death of the bride and her parents.
